What Does the Bible Say About..Jail?

What does the bible say about jail? How many people in the Bible went to jail?

Answer

Several people in the Bible were put in jail. One of the most famous would be Joseph in Genesis 39-40. He imprisoned one of his own brothers in Genesis 42.

In Judges 16, Samson was imprisoned by the Philistines. The Assyrians and Babylonians put several kings of Israel and Judah in prison. A king of Judah put Jeremiah in prison (Jeremiah 32-33).

In the New Testament, some of the apostles of Jesus were put in prison(Acts 5:18-25). They include Peter (Acts 12), and Paul and Silas (Acts 16).

These were mostly imprisoned for their faith. One that was not was Barabbas, who was in jail and released instead of Jesus. (Luke 23:19-25)

Besides this, the Bible doesn’t say much about jail. It appears the Jews generally did not put people in jail. There is little reason for the Bible to talk about it other than as it related to the Jews or early Christians.
