What Does the Bible Say About..Same Sex Marriage?

Where does the bible state homosexuals can not get married? I know the bible condemns fornication between homosexuals, but where does it say they can not marry?

Answer

Marriage between people who are of the same gender and who never intend to commit homosexual acts is not something the writers of the Bible ever considered. In both the Old Testament and New Testament the statement is made that “Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.” (Genesis 2:24; Matthew 19:5-6) Specific mention is made of a man and a woman.

One of the purposes of marriage is to allow sexual acts between a man and a woman without sin. “Nevertheless, to avoid fornication, let every man have his own wife, and let every woman have her own husband.” (1 Corinthians 7:2) (In the Greek the word for wife is very definitely a reference to a woman.)

“Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God.” (Romans 13:1) In those places where it is illegal for homosexuals to marry, the Bible definitely opposes it on legal grounds.

Whether the marriage be homosexual or heterosexual, I fail to see the purpose if sex is not involved. I know there are marriages of convenience to save money or gain certain benefits, but most of the time that can be accomplished without a formal marriage.
