What Does the Bible Say About..The Tree of Life?

In the book of Revelation, the first church of the 7th churches, to him who overcomes, Jesus will give to them the right to eat from the tree of life (a gift to live forever). For the rest of the churches though they've met the requirements of church number 1, does this mean that they are not going to live forever? Why can't anyone else eat from the tree of life?

Answer

The “rewards” or curses promised to the seven churches are probably not mutually exclusive. Frequently in the Bible, the number seven indicates completeness. So the seven congregations of Asia Minor would be representative of the church as a whole. Each showed different characteristics, each of which exists to a certain degree in every congregation. So the rewards for following Christ are promised to all, and the threat of punishment is to all as well.

The tree of life is mentioned again in Revelation 22:1-2. There it is freely available to all Christians. Therefore it must be available to all in the church. All Christians will live forever spiritually, a full and abundant life with God as opposed to eternal separation from God.
